Christ Hospital Back to Normal Operations

As of 7:30 pm this evening, operations at Christ Hospital have returned to normal. Earlier in the day, a transformer fire caused a partial loss of power to the facility, affecting the air conditioning and elevator services at the hospital.

Crews worked throughout the day to restore power to these services. Visitors and family members were dissuaded from visiting patients until these services had been restored to normal operation.

Due to the outstanding efforts of all hospital personnel, at no time during this incident was the safety of the patients at Christ Hospital compromised.

Taking Steps to Protect Yourself in Extreme Heat Conditions

The Combination of high temperatures and high humidity create a situation that can lead to heat related illnesses. It is important to keep out of the direct sun and keep strenuous activities to a minimum. If you work outside, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shade or air conditioned environments.

If you do not have air conditioning you can go to one of Jersey City’s Cooling Centers to get some temporary relief, their locations and hours are listed below.

You should be aware of heat exhaustion symptoms and take immediate action when they occur to prevent a more serious medical condition. The symptoms include:

  • profuse sweating
  • weakness
  • muscle cramps
  • headache
  • nausea and vomiting

As dehydration increases from the loss of body water, lightheadedness and fainting may occur, especially if you stand up quickly. A low grade fever also may be present. The elderly and the very young are at increased risk because they often don’t sweat like children and adults and run the risk of overheating quicker than others.

Heat exhaustion usually can be treated at home as long as you drink plenty of water or beverages that have electrolyte replacement such as sport drinks. If nausea and vomiting prevent you from rehydration, it is recommended that you seek medical attention.

Muscles cramps can be severe and if stretching and rehydration cannot relieve recurrent cramps, medical care may be necessary.

It is important to recognize that if the person stops sweating, skin becomes red and ⁄ or hot to the touch, the person seems confused, or passes out; they may be having a heat stroke, which is life-threatening. Call 911 immediately and attempt to cool them down while waiting for help by moving them, if possible, to a cooler place, loosening their clothing, and try to cool the body with cold compresses, ice, and by pouring cool water on their skin and head.

In an effort to assist Jersey City residents with the impending heat, local Hudson County municipalities have opened cooling centers. If you feel any heat exhaustion symptoms, please visit a cooling center in your area:

Christ Hospital Places in the Top Fifth of Decile Ranking of Hospitals in the Nation for Safety, Quality, and Efficiency

Christ Hospital is pleased to announce that it has been recognized by The Leap Frog Hospital Recognition Program (LHRP) with the 2011 Leapfrog Group Award for Quality Care for its role in providing excellence in quality of care and services to the members of our community.

Approximately 400 people die every day because of a preventable hospital error – the equivalent of a jet crashing every day and killing all aboard. In response to this silent epidemic, more than 2,600 U.S. hospitals will now receive A, B, C, D or F Hospital Safety Scores based on patient safety via a first-of-its-kind initiative. A Blue Ribbon Panel of the nation’s top patient safety experts provided guidance to The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits, to develop the Hospital Safety Score. The Hospital Safety Score is calculated using publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections.

The LHRP is designed to acknowledge hospitals that demonstrate excellence or improvements in the performance areas of patient safety, quality, and resource utilization. The LHRP’s value-based purchasing program uses the data captured in the Leapfrog Hospital Survey to evaluate hospital performance within the standardized, national measure set, composed of quality and resource utilization measures. These measures are weighted and rolled up into an overall value score which is used to determine recognition and rewards levels. The survey results for participating hospitals within the State of New Jersey are evaluated against the results from top-performing hospitals nationally.

“Receiving this designation further clarifies Christ Hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality healthcare to the residents of our community,” stated Peter A. Kelly, President and CEO, “The medical staff and hospital employees are to be commended for their continuing efforts to maintain Christ Hospital as a premiere provider of healthcare for the residents of Hudson County.”
